COPPELL, Texas (January 12, 2024) - NCAA record holder, author, college football coach, motivational speaker, and respected researcher Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II's hometown of Coppell, Texas, celebrates his amazing achievements in college football during Tom Thompson Appreciation Day every year on January 12.

But this year is especially dear to the hearts of the Texas football icon and his family, as they also celebrate another significant family milestone.

Thompson's son, Jon Rawles, is a high school senior and running back on the football team at Coppell High School. Jon Rawles was recently offered to play football at Austin College, where Thompson made his NCAA record-breaking kick and is a member of the coaching staff. Jon Rawles will become a member of the Class of 2028 at Austin College next Fall.

"I'm just thrilled to have the opportunity to coach alongside my son," says Thompson. "His mother and I are so proud of him—he has worked very hard for this opportunity."

“I’m also proud and humbled to be honored by Coppell, Texas. This is the hometown everyone wishes they grew up in,” says Thompson. “It’s a great place to live and raise a family."

On November 14, 2009, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point. At 61, Thompson kicked his way into the record books by scoring the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University.

That kick made history and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, thrusting both Thompson and his coach, Texas football legend Ronnie Gage, into the national media spotlight, with coverage by outlets including CBS and NBC News and Sports, ABC and Fox News, ESPN, Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, Sports Illustrated, and more.

Dr. Thompson has detailed his remarkable accomplishments in his inspiring autobiography, Kick Start: A Story of Overcoming Life's Obstacles to Inspire You to Kick Start Your Future (Carpenter's Son Publishing),

His latest book is The Life Coach: Small-Town Lessons on Faith, Family and Football (Clovercroft Publishing), which he co-authored with Coach Ronnie Gage and Alice Sullivan.

COPPELL, Texas. (May 13, 2022) - NCAA record holder, author, football coach, motivational speaker, respected researcher, and 10th degree black belt Tae Kwon Do grandmaster Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II is adding one more accolade to his already impressive list of accomplishments.

Thompson is prominently featured in this week's online edition of Sports Illustrated magazine in the venerated publication's new article about the oldest college football players in history.

Thompson was interviewed about his road to the NCAA, his experience playing with teammates, most of whom were 40 years his junior, and breaking two NCAA records on the field.

"It was a pleasure to be interviewed by Lia Assimakopoulos of Sports Illustrated,” Thompson says of the experience. It was a time in my life I will never forget. It was incredibly hard work, but worth every ounce of effort."

To read the full Sports Illustrated story, click here or read the excerpt about Tom Thompson in the section below.

On November 14, 2009, Dr. Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point. At 61, Thompson kicked his way into the record books by scoring the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. Austin College Kangaroos head coach Ronnie Gage stood on the sidelines and watched the football sail between the uprights.

That kick made history and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, thrusting both Dr. Thompson and his coach, Texas football legend, Coach Ronnie Gage, into the national media spotlight, with coverage by outlets including CBS and NBC News and Sports, ABC and Fox News, ESPN, Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, Sports Illustrated, and more.

"If my story says anything, it is that it is never too late to re-imagine what you want your life to be,” says Dr. Thompson, a respected researcher in the fields of motivation and change, who wondered one day at the age of 59 if he might still be eligible to play college football.

And the rest is history...

In addition to his college football exploits, Dr. Thompson's past sports achievements include founding the martial arts program at the famed Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas, sitting on the Board of Advisors of the American Council on Martial Arts, and founding his own style of Tae Kwon Do, called KI Il Do Kwan. Thompson also recently earned the distinction of being promoted to 10th-degree black belt, an achievement few Tae Kwon Do practitioners ever attain.

Excerpts from this week's Sports Illustrated online article include the following:

  • Since 2004, at least 14 players across the NCAA have played above the age of 30...Some of them just barely crossed that 30-year mark—others [like Thompson, who played at age 60 through 61] more than doubled it.

  • Tom Thompson may have jumped over more eligibility hurdles than anyone. The oldest player in NCAA history, he kicked for Austin College in 2009 at 61. Thompson had received his doctorate in strategic leadership from Regent University in ’02 but had never played college football and was eager to do so.

  • "My circumstances were so convoluted that I was able to demonstrate to the NCAA that I was able to continue [getting an education], so I ended up with a year [of eligibility]," [Thompson] says.

  • [Thompson] enrolled in an undergraduate program and took classes like psychology and history to start. However, Austin College had only one graduate program, which was teaching, so he had to pursue that track to continually show progress and be able to play.

  • "It was a dynamic where they’re learning something from me, and I’m learning something from them," [says Thompson].

  • Thompson, who was 40 years older than his next oldest teammate [sic]...says, “The age just melted away. I wasn’t an oddity to them,” he says. “They were very protective, much like you’d imagine they’d be watching their grandfather play football.”

  • [Thompson's] teammates even wanted him to have an authentic college experience, often inviting him to their fraternity parties, he remembers.

  • "I went to one, and I took my wife," he says. "It was fun for them because I was sort of a celebrity on campus."

  • For many, being on a college football roster was a dream come true in itself. Few worked their way into the rotation for multiple years... Most saw the field no more than once or twice.

  • But when that moment came, it reminded them why they were there in the first place.

  • For Thompson, his opportunity arrived in the final game of his career against Austin College’s archrival, Trinity University. He compared their rivalry to that of Michigan and Ohio State’s. Early in the second quarter, Austin College had the chance to tie the game at seven after finding the end zone on a 47-yard rush, and Thompson got the nod. He took the field, and just like he had practiced thousands of times before, nailed it through the uprights. As much as making that kick meant to him, his teammates’ reaction meant even more.

  • "I don't know if I was happier when the kick was good or if they were," [Thompson] says. "You’d have thought we won the Super Bowl."

  • Multiple players went on to write books about their experiences [including Thompson, who shared his memories in his motivational and autobiographical book, Kick Start]. Most have stepped away from football altogether, but for some, like Thompson, those few months on the team led to a new calling.

  • "We were having our exit interviews, and my coach said, ‘Would you consider staying and being our kicking coach?'" Thompson says. "I looked at him like a dog that couldn’t hear well. He said, ‘No, really. These kids, they look up to you, and they respond to you really well. And nobody knows more about kicking than you.'"

  • Thirteen years later, Thompson is still the kicking coach at Austin College, where he continues to impact the lives of young players and never lets them give up on their dreams.

About The Life Coach:

On November 14, 2009, Coach Ronnie Gage, then the head football coach at Austin College, watched from the sidelines as Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II kicked his way into the record books. At 61, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. While that kick made history and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, the event was never designed to be a publicity stunt. In fact, Coach Gage didn’t even like Thompson at first, and assumed he was “a wacko with an agenda” for wanting to play college football at 60. But as the season wore on, Coach Gage realized Thompson’s heart was in the right place.

“We didn’t really develop a relationship until after the season was over,” says Thompson. “I didn’t presume because we were close in age that I could engage him in any topic other than football.

"The man is a legend in Texas football history, and it was important to me that my teammates see me treat him with the respect he deserved," Thompson continues. "He told me flat out that he was not giving me any special treatment. And I appreciated that. But I knew when I first got to know Coach Gage that we would do some things together.”

The Life Coach is the first result of their “post-kick” collaborations. A combination of sports memoir and inspirational leadership manual, The Life Coach delves into how to juggle the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of everyday life.

“Coach Gage is a quiet, humble guy, and his faith has been a big part of his life,” Thompson explains. “He’s gone through some of the worst things that life can throw at you, including the loss of his daughter to a brain tumor, and is still able to cling to the goodness of God.”

Thompson detailed his remarkable accomplishments in his motivational and autobiographical book, Kick Start: A Story of Overcoming Life's Obstacles to Inspire You to Kick Start Your Future, which he co-wrote with Alice Sullivan (Carpenter's Son Publishing), and Get a Kick Out of Life: Expect the Best of Your Body, Mind, and Soul at Any Age, co-written with Christopher P. Thompson, who is an active researcher in the fields of motivation and change, has also co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as the book Fit To Lead: The Proven 8-Week Solution for Shaping Up Your Body, Your Mind, and Your Career (St. Martin's Press), which he co-authored with Christopher P. About the National Football Foundation: Founded in 1947 with early leadership from General Douglas MacArthur, legendary Army coach Earl "Red" Blaik, and immortal journalist Grantland Rice, the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Football Hall of Fame is a non-profit educational organization that runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in young people.

They fulfill this mission in the following ways:

By inspiring young people to excellence: holding up the greatest players and coaches in the history of the game as role models and enshrining them and their achievements in the College Football Hall of Fame.

By exciting young people, and those who influence them, about the game: in particular, managing the College Football Hall of Fame in such a way as to dramatize the history, exhilaration and value of the game to an ever broadening audience of fans and potential fans.

By developing, managing and promoting model football programs, which further strengthen the educational and character building qualities of the game.

By honoring, publicizing and providing financial support to high school and college football players who represent our ideal of the scholar-athlete.

By continuing a grassroots movement, through local chapters, while involving football fans, coaches, educators, the media and former players in the implementation of the programs, which will fulfill our mission for America.

Through this mission, The Foundation serves not only youth, but the nation as well.

COPPELL, Texas. (January 12, 2022) - NCAA record holder, author, motivational speaker, respected researcher, and Tae Kwon Do grandmaster Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II is honored each year on this day by the North Texas town of Coppell.

A thriving community of 41,000 residents, Thompson's hometown holds its annual Tom Thompson Appreciation Day in remembrance of his amazing achievements in college football.

Thompson, a respected researcher in the fields of motivation and change, who wondered one day at the age of 59 if he might still be elligible to play college football.

And the rest is history...

On this year's Tom Thompson Appreciation Day, Dr. Thompson, an American-born Tae Kwon Do grandmaster, is not only commemorating his record-breaking NCAA victory, but also marking his recent promotion to 10th-degree black belt, an achievement few Tae Kwon Do practioners ever reach.

Dr. Thompson's past martial arts achievements include founding the martial arts program at the famed Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas, sitting on the Board of Advisors of the American Council on Martial Arts, and founding his own style of Tae Kwon Do, called KI Il Do Kwan.

“It’s truly an honor to be recognized by my peers in the martial arts," says Dr. Thompson.

GRAPEVINE, Texas. (July 13, 2021) - Coach Ronnie Gage, recently named one of the winningest high school football coaches in 100 years of Texas history, attended the National Religious Broadcasters Convention (NRB 2021) in Grapevine, Texas, to represent his critically acclaimed book, The Life Coach: Small-Town Lessons on Faith, Family, and Football, which he co-wrote with author, motivational speaker, and NCAA record holder, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II and Alice Sullivan.

During the convention, Coach Gage met with many media and industry leaders, including KSBJ's Sunday Night Live with host Kim Weir, Bill Martinez Live!, World Christian Broadcasting, MRG Media, and The Build Different Podcast with Zach Clinton, among others.

“I really enjoyed the day at the NRB 2021 convention at the Gaylord in Grapevine, Texas," says Coach Gage. "I had a great opportunity to network with colleagues and media—these professional and congenial people made the day a pleasure."

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) and highly respected Texas football publication Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) recently honored Coach Gage among the best, the brightest, and the most unforgettable icons and legends in Texas football's illustrious history.

Coach Gage is cited for his 26 years of coaching, during which time he compiled a 187-107-8 record on his way to winning seven District Championships and two State Championships.

UIL and DCTF also note that Coach Gage was recognized as the Texas Sportswriters Association’s Coach of the Year in 1993 and again in 1996, in addition to his being selected for the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

“Whenever you receive an award or recognition for your accomplishments, it is a reflection of the people who surrounded you,” says Coach Gage. “I have been blessed to work with great coaches, and have a supportive family, great kids, and wonderful friends. I am honored to have my name associated with so many prestigious coaches. I am extremely proud to carry the title of coach!”

While that kick made history, and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, the event was never designed to be a publicity stunt.

“We didn’t really develop a relationship until after the season was over,” says Thompson. “I didn’t presume because we were close in age that I could engage him in any topic other than football.

One of the winningest high school football coaches in the state of Texas, Coach Ronnie Gage offers a wealth of insight to leaders and managers in his book, The Life Coach, co-written with Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II and Alice Sullivan. (Cover image courtesy of Clovercroft Publishing)

COPPELL, Texas. (January 12, 2021) - Today, Tuesday, January 12, 2021, the North Texas town of Coppell, a thriving community of 41,000 residents, will honor one of its favorite sons: author, motivational speaker, and respected researcher, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II. On this day, the town recognizes its annual Tom Thompson Appreciation Day, honoring Thompson for his amazing achievements in college football.

“What an incredibly humbling experience to be so honored by my home town,” says Thompson. “Coppell is a great place to live and raise a family, and I’m proud to call this my home.”

On November 14, 2009, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point. At 61, Thompson kicked his way into the record books by scoring the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. Ronnie Gage, head coach of the Austin College Kangaroos stood on the sidelines and watched the football sail between the uprights.

That kick made history and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, thrusting both Thompson and his coach, Texas football legend, Coach Ronnie Gage, into the national media spotlight, with coverage by outlets including CBS and NBC News and Sports, ABC and Fox News, ESPN, Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, Sports Illustrated, and more.

However, the event was never designed to be a publicity stunt. In fact, Coach Gage didn’t even like the idea of Thompson joining the team at first, and assumed he was “a wacko with an agenda” for wanting to play college football at 60. But as the season wore on, Coach Gage realized Thompson’s heart was in the right place.

“There are plenty of football players with exceptional talent,” Coach Gage explained. “But sometimes you scout a player who is an inch too short or 1/10th of a second too slow, but they have heart… they have passion. If it comes down to a choice between talent or heart, I’ll go with the heart every time. That’s one thing I learned about Tom Thompson—he had talent, but he also had heart.”

The NCAA record holder has since teamed up with his former college football coach to deliver The Life Coach, a book that is part inspirational memoir, part Texas football history, and part motivational guide for leaders.

The Life Coach is the latest in a long line of accomplishments that sparked Thompson's home town to proclaim its annual Tom Thompson Appreciation Day in his honor.

Since detailing his remarkable accomplishments in his inspiring autobiography, Kick Start, in 2012, followed by his collaboration with Coach Ronnie Gage, which resulted in the 2019 release of his latest book, The Life Coach, from Clovercroft Publishing, Thompson’s life has kicked into high gear.

2020 was no exception, as Thompson and Gage were sought-after guests on such influential media outlets as Cornerstone TV, Inspiration.org, CBN.com, Bill Martinez Live!, The Meeting House on Faith Radio, and World Christian Broadcasting, where the two shared the story of their unique relationship.

“We didn’t really develop a relationship until after the season was over,” Thompson said. “I didn’t presume because we were close in age that I could engage him in any topic other than football. The man is a legend in Texas football history, and it was important to me that my teammates see me treat him with the respect he deserved. He told me flat out that he was not giving me any special treatment. And I appreciated that. But I knew when I first got to know Coach Gage that we would do some things together.”

About The Life Coach

On November 14, 2009, Austin College Coach Ronnie Gage stood on the sidelines and watched a football sail between the uprights. Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II had just kicked his way into the record books. At 61, an age when many people are looking for the rocking chair, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. While that kick made history, and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, the event was never designed to be a publicity stunt. In fact, Coach Gage had initially assumed Thompson was "a wacko with an agenda" for wanting to play college football at 60. But as the season wore on, Coach Gage realized Thompson's heart was in the right place.

"There are plenty of football players with exceptional talent," Coach Gage explains. "But sometimes you have a player who is an inch too short or 1/10th of a second too slow, but they have heart . . . they have passion. If it comes down to a choice between talent or heart, I'll go with the heart every time. That's one thing I learned about Tom Thompson--he wasn't talented, but he had heart."

"We didn't really develop a personal friendship until after the season was over," says Thompson. "I didn't presume because we were close in age that I could engage him in any topic other than football. The man is a legend in Texas football history--one of the winningest coaches ever at the high school level--and it was important to me that my teammates see me treat him with the respect he deserved. He told me flat out that he was not giving me any special treatment. And I appreciated that. But I knew when I first got to know Coach Gage that we would do some things together."

"Hardship doesn't have to put you in a hole you can't crawl out of," Coach Gage muses. "As a coach, I was harder on kids who tried to use hardship as a crutch. Life is about working as hard as you can, and being the best you can be. If you do that, you have a chance to win. If you don't prepare hard, it cuts your chances of being successful. At the end of the day, our legacy will be determined by a culmination of the choices we make along the way."

"Coach Gage is a quiet, humble guy, and his faith has been a big part of his life," Thompson explains. "He's gone through some of the worst things that life can throw at you, including the loss of his daughter to a brain tumor, and is still able to cling to the goodness of God."

Each chapter in The Life Coach includes some of Coach Gage's life story, which includes his marriage to his high school sweetheart, 42 years' worth of wins, losses, and ties in one of the most competitive football environments in the country, along with the trials, tribulations, and ordinary victories of a life well lived. Thompson adds a special "Huddle Up with Tom Thompson" section to each chapter, gleaning lessons for leaders from Coach Gage's story.

"My part of the book is sharing leadership principles based on Coach Gage's story, and then showing how they apply to everyday life," says Thompson. "For me, the most powerful part of the book is when he was dealing with his daughter's illness. Most of the team didn't even know she was sick. In February of that year, we had a football player collapse and die. When Coach was notified, he left his daughter in the hospital, drove to the college to address the team about the goodness of God, then drove back to be with his daughter. That's the kind of man Coach Gage is. He has the unique ability to encourage people when they are going through hard times, and to help them realize that life is better with God."

The Life Coach is published by Clovercroft Publishing and distributed to the trade by Ingram Content Group, the world's largest distributor of printed content.

About Tom Thompson:

Author, professor, researcher, motivational speaker, coach and NCAA record breaker, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II, D.S.L., M.S., M.A., kicked his way into the record books at age 61, when he became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University on November 14, 2009.

Thompson's late-in-life college football career was
neither the beginning nor the end of his claim to fame. During his remarkable life, Thompson (a 9th degree black belt Tae Kwon Do grandmaster and a former Board of Advisors member of the American Council on Martial Arts) has worked out with Chuck Norris, partied with Elvis, borrowed money from the mob (and lived to tell about it), married a beauty queen and had a personal encounter with God.

Thompson, a respected researcher in the fields of motivation and change, recently collaborated with his friend and former coach, Ronnie Gage, on the inspirational and motivational memoir, The Life Coach, which offers readers sound life and leadership principles based on the individual effort and team-first mentality required for a successful football season--and a successful life.

Thompson's late-in-life college football career was neither the beginning nor the end of his claim to fame.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 11, 2020) - The city of Coppell, Texas, will honor Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II during the city's annual Tom Thompson Appreciation Day celebration on January 12, 2020.

The annual  celebration commemorates the author, coach and NCAA record breaker's accomplishment of November 14, 2009, when he became both the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point.

At 61, Thompson was kicking his way into the record books by scoring the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. Ronnie Gage, head coach of the Austin College Kangaroos and a Texas high school football legend, stood on the sidelines and watched the football sail between the uprights.

That kick thrust both Thompson and Gage into the national media spotlight, with coverage by outlets including CBS and NBC News and Sports, ABC and Fox News, ESPN, Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, Sports Illustrated, and more. While Thompson's game-winning kick made history and put tiny Austin College on the sports media map, the event was never designed to be a publicity stunt. In fact, Coach Gage didn't even like Thompson at first, and assumed he was "a wacko with an agenda" for wanting to play college football at 60. But as the season wore on, Coach Gage realized Thompson's heart was in the right place.

"There are plenty of football players with exceptional talent," Coach Gage explains. "But sometimes you scout a player who is an inch too short or 1/10th of a second too slow, but they have heart... they have passion. If it comes down to a choice between talent or heart, I'll go with the heart every time. That's one thing I learned about Tom Thompson--he had talent, but he also had heart."The NCAA record breaker has since teamed up with his former college football coach to deliver The Life Coach, a new book that is part inspirational memoir, part Texas football history, and part motivational guide for leaders.

The Life Coach released on October 1, 2019, from Clovercroft Publishing, and is distributed to the trade by Ingram Content Group, the world's largest distributor of printed content. About The Life Coach:

Written by author, professor, researcher, motivational speaker, coach and NCAA record breaker, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II and legendary Texas football coach Ronnie Gage, with Alice Sullivan, The Life Coach is part inspirational memoir, part Texas football history, and part motivational guide for leaders.

The new book released from Clovercroft Publishing on October 1, 2019, and is distributed to the trade by Ingram Content Group, the world's largest distributor of printed content.

The Life Coach is the first result of Thompson and Gage's "post-kick" collaboration since Gage coached Thompson into the NCAA record books. A combination sports memoir and inspirational leadership manual, The Life Coach delves into how to juggle the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of everyday life.

"We didn't really develop a relationship until after that season was over," says Thompson. "I didn't presume because we were close in age that I could engage him in any topic other than football. The man is a legend in Texas football history, and it was important to me that my teammates see me treat him with the respect he deserved. He told me flat out that he was not giving me any special treatment. And I appreciated that. But I knew when I first got to know Coach Gage that we would do some things together."

"Coach Gage is a quiet, humble guy, and his faith has been a big part of his life," Dr. Thompson explains.

Dr. Thompson adds a special "Huddle Up with Tom Thompson" section to each chapter, gleaning lessons for leaders from Coach Gage's story.

"My part of the book is sharing leadership principles based on Coach Gage's story, and then showing how they apply to everyday life," says Dr. Thompson.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 22, 2019) - Author, motivational speaker and NCAA record breaker, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II, is featured today on Inspiration Ministries' influential website, Inspiration.org.

In an interview with Inspiration.org's Editor of Digital Content, Dr. Craig von Buseck, Thompson talks about his latest book, Get a Kick Out of Life, and his record breaking accomplishments on the athletic field, as well as offering sound advice regarding reaching your full potential, regardless of your age. Not only known for breaking records when he became both the oldest player in NCAA football history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point, Thompson is also a respected researcher in the field of motivation. Thompson's new book, Get a Kick Out of Life, which he co-wrote with Christopher P. Neck, Ph.D., a pioneer in the field of self leadership (Mastering Self Leadership: Empowering Yourself for Personal Excellence) and Alice Sullivan (co-author of Thompson's autobiography, Kick Start), builds on his background and reputation as an NCAA football record holder, physical fitness expert and academic researcher in the fields of motivation and change.

Thompson, who says his purpose in life is to encourage people of all ages to live healthy and fulfilled lives, to discover and reach their full potential, and to develop a deeper faith in the process, has expanded on his research to deliver Get a Kick Out of Life.

"We all set goals for ourselves every day," Thompson muses. "Wake up by 5:30. Respond to all emails in my inbox. Get the kids dressed in under 20 minutes. You might think of these as insignificant goals, but it isn't the size of the goal that matters. It's whether you consistently set achievable goals and reach them. In truth, these smaller goals can create great momentum for those larger goals on your list."

Thompson holds several advanced degrees, including his doctorate and two master's degrees, in Kinesiology, Organizational Leadership, Strategic Leadership, and Teaching. He lectures to both lay and academic groups and is the author of several books and numerous co-authored articles in peer reviewed academic journals.

With his impressive academic credentials, readers may be surprised to learn that as a young man, Thompson was a poor student and dropped out of college. A hard worker, however, he went on to two successful careers, in real estate and physical fitness. Then, at age 45, he found himself ready for a change. Upon the advice of some wise mentors, he decided to go back to school and finish his undergraduate degree in business management. To his surprise, he found that when he applied himself with a determined attitude, he became a successful student. He ended up going to school for eight straight years while earning his advanced degrees. After falling in love with academic research, he began his new career while completing his graduate studies.

Thompson first came to national attention in 2009, when, at age 61, he kicked his way into the record books, becoming the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University. Thompson had originally decided to return to Austin College as a sexagenarian to complete another year of undergraduate work so that he would be eligible to play football.

It was during this time of setting goals in each major area of his life while he was practicing with the Austin College football team, going to school, and still being involved at home as a husband and father, that Thompson had an epiphany. He realized he could not succeed in all of these areas without goals and a vision of where he wanted to go, what he wanted to achieve, and a timeline for when he would reach the mark. Thompson realized that goal setting was the key for ordinary individuals, regardless of age, circumstances, or current level of ability, to achieve greatness in all areas of life.

Divided into three sections--Body, Mind, and Soul--Get a Kick Out of Life serves as a roadmap for living intentionally, setting attainable goals, keeping your body healthy through appropriate exercise and proper diet, pursuing your purpose in life and delving deeper into relationships with your friends and family.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 11,
2019) - On November 14, 2009, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II kicked his way into the record books. At 61, an age when many people are looking for the rocking chair, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University.
Thompson's hometown of Coppell, Texas, will honor that record-breaking feat tomorrow during its annual Tom Thompson Appreciation Day on Saturday, January 12, 2019.

On the sidelines watching Thompson's celebrated kick in 2009 was Thompson's young son, Jon Rawles. The now-seventh grader began his own football career this past fall, and his proud father is excited about "passing the torch" to the next generation of Thompsons.

"I was never one to push Jon Rawles into the game of football, but he has a childlike joy in playing sports and I want him to enjoy his life," says Thompson. "I love to watch him play! He is a special blessing in my life and I am privileged to be his dad. He is carrying the Thompson torch of wanting to make whatever he's part of better."

Jon Rawles will help celebrate Tom Thompson Appreciation Day this year, and he recently joined his father to meet with Coppell, Texas, Mayor Karen Hunt to prepare for the celebration.

"I am very proud of what my Dad has accomplished, and I look forward to celebrating Tom Thompson Appreciation Day on January 12th in Coppell," says Jon Rawles. "I enjoy being part of his legacy. What a great example God has given me in my Dad!"

"I am so blessed to live here in Coppell, Texas," says Thompson. "It's a great place to raise a family. And what a privilege to share Tom Thompson Appreciation Day with my son Jon Rawles by my side!"

About Tom Thompson & Get a Kick Out of Life:

Author, professor, researcher, motivational speaker, coach and NCAA record breaker, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II, D.S.L., M.S., M.A., kicked his way into the record books at age 61, when he became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University on November 14, 2009.

Thompson's late-in-life college football career was neither the beginning nor the end of his claim to fame. But while he has earned his share of success and accolades, Thompson is the first to admit that he's experienced more than his share of spectacular failures along the way -- professionally, financially, and personally.

"Between my real estate ventures, my finances, my family, and my marriages, my life seemed to be a never-ending roller coaster of ups and downs," Thompson confesses. "I was beyond tired of the ride. I was completely broken. My faith was in tatters. At the age of forty-one, for the first time, rather than shrink back, I chose to become serious about my relationship with God. I made the decision to make Jesus the Lord of my life, in addition to being my Savior. I conceded that my way hadn't been working, and that I needed to allow Him to have control over my life, my heart, and my decisions. I was no longer in charge. This time, things were noticeably different."

Now Thompson, a respected researcher in the fields of motivation and change, offers readers sound advice for reaching their full potential, regardless of their age, in his latest motivational book,

Get a Kick Out of Life: Expect the Best of Your Body, Mind, and Soul at Any Age, which he co-authored with Christopher P. Neck, Ph.D., a recognized authority on management and self leadership, and writer Alice Sullivan.

Divided into three sections -- Body, Mind, and Soul -- Get a Kick Out of Life serves as a roadmap for living intentionally, exploring such topics as setting attainable goals, physical fitness and nutrition, finding your purpose, and developing deeper relationships with family and friends.

Thompson believes the book will help empower readers to discover and reach their full potential. "If my story says anything, it is that it is never too late to re-imagine what you want your life to be."

Get a Kick Out of Life continues to garner rave reviews.

"On the road to greatness, there are always hurdles and roadblocks," says Superbowl XLVI champion and former New York Giants wide receiver Isaiah Stanback. "Champions stay the course while others turn around. Get a Kick Out of Life teaches you how to create and live up to your greatest potential. Decide to be great or decide to be average -- the choice is yours."

"I've known Tom Thompson for almost five decades and his life story is an inspirational one that reveals his pursuit of and drive for excellence," says Keith D. Yates, founder and president of the American Karate and Tae Kwon Do Organization, and a retired adjunct professor of Media Arts and Communications at Dallas Theological Seminary. "This book is a roadmap to developing that same kind of passion in your own life. It will help you balance mind, body, and soul in your own journey."

"Really excited about this book ... it's jam-packed with wisdom and actionable content," says On Faith's Edge host Joe Taylor.

In addition to interviews, book signings and speaking engagements, Thompson serves as Brand Ambassador for Evil Cowboy Hot Sauce, an heirloom Texas hot sauce company.

Get a Kick Out of Life is published by Clovercroft Publishing and distributed to the trade by Ingram Content Group, the world's largest distributor of printed content. Thompson and his wife, Teresa, reside in Coppell, Texas, and have three children -- Eric, Rachel and Jon Rawles.

But while he has earned his share of success and accolades, Thompson is the first to admit that he's experienced more than his share of spectacular failures along the way; professionally, financially and personally.

I made the decision to make Jesus Lord of my life, in addition to being my Savior. I conceded that my way hadn't been working and that I needed to allow Him to have control over my life, my heart, and my decisions. I was no longer in charge. This time, things were noticeably different."

Divided into three sections--Body, Mind, and Soul--Get a Kick Out of Life serves as a roadmap for living intentionally, exploring such topics as setting attainable goals, physical fitness and nutrition, finding your purpose, and developing deeper relationships with family and friends.

Thompson believes the book will help empower readers to discover and reach their full potential. "If my story says anything, it is that it is never too late to re-imagine what you want your life to be."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 15, 2018) - Author, motivational speaker and physical fitness expert, Dr. Emmet C. (Tom) Thompson II will be in Nashville in July for CBA's UNITE 2018 International Christian Retail Show, which will be held at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, Sunday through Wednesday, July 8-11.

Thompson will be signing copies of his latest book, Get a Kick Out of Life, at a book signing event on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 9 a.m. at the Clovercroft Publishing booth.

While at UNITE 2018, the author is slated to meet with members of the media and other industry leaders to discuss Get a Kick Out of Life. In addition to the paperback version of the book, Clovercroft Publishing has recently released the digital version of Get a Kick Out of Life, which is now available in all major eBook formats from major online retailers including Amazon.com, iTunes, Kobo.com and BN.com, for such platforms as the Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle, Kobo Aura, and Nook eReader.

"When Amazon pioneered the Kindle e-book reader 10 years ago, I don't think anyone realized how that device would change the literary landscape," says Thompson. "E-books now account for around 25 percent of all book sales. We wanted to make sure folks who prefer to read books digitally have access to the great information contained in Get a Kick Out of Life."

While at the conference, Thompson will also be meeting with industry insiders regarding an exciting new announcement that is in the works. Details are forthcoming, but Thompson says it will be a game changer for fans of his books.

On November 14, 2009, Thompson kicked his way into the record books. At 61, an age when many people are looking for the rocking chair, Thompson became the oldest football player in NCAA history and the oldest NCAA football player to score a point when he kicked the PAT (Point After Touchdown) in the second quarter of the game between Austin College and Trinity University.

Thompson's background and reputation as an NCAA record breaker, physical fitness expert and academic researcher in the field of motivation and change have opened the door for him to literally write the book on motivation for older adults who are approaching their golden years, young people seeking to find their first job, and anyone at any age who wants to take charge of their own destiny.

"It's never too late to live your best life," Thompson declares in Get a Kick Out of Life. "You can harness the power of the body, mind, and soul to live your most fulfilling life yet!"

The book has garnered rave reviews.
